Nova crystals are a valuable commodity. Raw crystals freed from their rocky matrix were unstable (sensitive to jostling and heat) and highly explosive, for further use they have to be bound to inert trace elements in refineries. The crystals themselves are bright green and easily crafted into gemstones for jewelry and decoration. Nova crystals are used as a currency in the Outer Rim and other places where Galactic Standard Credits are not accepted. It is also possible, though unconfirmed, that they are usable as lightsaber crystals.

The Galactic Credit Standard, simply called credit, colloquially referred to as Republic Dataries, and later known as the Imperial Credit, is the main currency in use in the galaxy since the time of the Galactic Republic, and then the Galactic Empire. We all use credits, because the game only uses one currency. But not anymore. The Krath were the first to shift from imperial credits to nova crystals, a currency used in three large Outer Rim sectors already.

The official exchange rate released by the Dynasty Bank is fully backed by the Krath Dynasty at all times. So you are assured that you can always convert it to credits. 

Nova Crystals are a form of currency introduced by The Krath Dynasty and used within Krath territory. Several other factions and groups have also decided to accept Nova Crystals in payment - the full list of participating groups is listed later. They are used in lieu of credits, since each Nova Crystal has a set credit value which is guaranteed by The Krath Dynasty. Although not as easily transferable as credits due to their item nature, it does allow for greater communication between parties. Additionally, it is planned to have the Nova Crystal exchange rate based on other entities within the galaxy, so even though inflation occurs, your buying power will remain much the same. Different from credits where you will effectively loose money over time as things become more expensive. This also means, that depending on the rate of inflation, this may be an excellent way to set up an investment for the future.
